Meet the Family.

Our History

Edward Charles Fahey moved with his Wife, Ellen to Glenbernie Orchard in 1939. They grew chickens, potatoes, had a few backyard fruit trees and cut firewood to sell. Their son, Edward Martin (Ted, pictured above) and daughter Jocelyn, worked to help their parents on the farm from an early age. The family lived with their Grandmother, Maude Kate Martin in an old cottage on the farm. The cottage is in the gallery above, of which the chimney still stands today!

As a young man, Ted began to plant more fruit trees, each year adding more. He married Ruth, and they had three sons. Their eldest son Glenn has continued the growth of the business, along with his wife Jo-Anne. Their children Casey and Brandon (the 4th generation) are interested in the future directions of the farm, and our new value-adding journey with cider and events. Ted and Ruth are particularly excited to see the first of the 5th generation, Elouise, growing up on the farm.

The Roots of our Business

Today, DARKES Glenbernie Orchard is the commercial side of our business. We are a conventional orchard, made up of approximately 100 acres and 22 500 fruit trees. We grow apples, peaches and nectarines. We sell as much of our fruit as we can on the farm at our retail space ‘The Apple Shack’, and a large portion goes to Sydney Markets. Apples from our orchard are used in our cider ‘DARKES Cider’.
